Mangalore: Konkani Teachers’ Day celebrations held in City

Mangalore, 05 Sep 2014: Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy in association with Lions Club International (LCI) Mangalore, organized Konkani Teachers Day celebrations at Lions Seva Mandir, Mallikatte, here on Tuesday September 2.
LCI district 317 former governor K C Prabhu inaugurated the programme by pulling the rope of flower basket that showered petals on the occasion.
DIET principal and DDPI Cyprian Monteiro was the chief guest of the occasion.
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy president Roy Castelino in his presidential address said that mass awareness on Konkani has been created since it was recognized in Indian constitution. It has to be carried forward by teaching Konkani in schools. Konkani gets authenticated by teaching in schools. It is being taught till Class X, while it would continue in I PUC hopefully with the permission from state administration. The efforts are underway to form a chair of Konkani in Mangalore University, said Castelino.
Speaking on the occasion, Cyprian after releasing ‘Konkani Sampada’ handbook on Konkani teaching to the teachers assured all assistance from DIET in Konkani studies.
LCI Mangalore president C P Dinesh, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy registrar Dr Devdas Pai was present at the dais.
Mangalore University head of department of Kannada Professor Shivaram Shetty spoke on teaching Konkani effectively as third optional language.
Roy Castelino welcomed the gathering. LCI Mangalore secretary B Satish Rai proposed vote of thanks. Alwyn Danti compered the programme.
