Bantwal: Netravati River nearly reaches danger mark; Floods inundate villages

Bantwal, 1 Aug 2014: The lifeline Netravati River is on the verge of crossing the danger mark owing to torrential rains in Malnad regions and across the taluk, here on Friday August 1.
The houses located low-lying areas – Panemangalore, Aladka and Jakribettu are inundated owing the surge in floods. Ten houses in Aladka are partially submerged in flood waters. The water level in Netravati River has reached 8.5 meters on Friday morning, which was just 5.9 meters on Thursday July 31 evening.
Bantwal Tahsildar Malleswamy visited the flood-hit villages and the people are shifted to safe places.
The traffic in Bastipadpu, Panemangalore and Aladka was affected owing to floods. The state-run buses had to ply on national highway as usual route was flooded.
The farmlands including plantations are flooded causing huge loss to the peasants.
A M R Power that is operating hydel plant at Shamboor, near here opened 19 crest gates of their dam on Thursday evening, with prior announcement, said A M R nodal officer Premanat. The release of water from the dam further surged the floods.
It can be recalled that such kind of floods were witnessed on July 4 2013. The monsoon has nearly recovered the shortfall after the initial lull in coastal district. The general life was disrupted throughout the floods till it receded.
The policemen tried their best to shift the people trapped in floods at their homes, besides to manage smooth traffic.
The state forests and Dakshina Kannada district-in-charge minister B Ramanath Rai instructed the revenue department officials to take necessary measures to avoid any difficulties to the people affected by floods.
The schools and colleges remained closed owing to Nagarapanchami on Friday. Bantwal block education officer Sheshashayana Karinja said that the heads of schools were advised to announce holiday in case the students are unable to come to the school from flood-hit villages.
