Meet Radha (76) who has great passion for gardening lives at Kadiyali

Udupi, 19 March 2016: An elderly woman who breathes farming by nurturing plants of all sorts of fruits and vegetables, who is none other than Radha…..!

 

If one loves gardening in the backyard, he/she does not need acres of land…! Seventy-six-year-old Radha V Bhat, who lives in Akshata Nivas, II Cross, Kadiyali, Udupi town is the classic example of how one can change the landscape in the household by growing varieties of crop and flowers. She has great inclination for floriculture and growing vegetable crops.

 

 

She has a house in a 15-cents plot. Several flower-yielding plants are growing around the house. Many vegetable plants are yielding varieties of vegetables, besides commercial crops. She is fully engaged in nurturing the plants and weaving the flowers for offering at Sri Krishna mutt, here. The secret of good health lies in her busy in her courtyard, watering the plants and nurturing tenderly.

 

Varieties of flowers – jasmine, roses, bougainvillea, tulsi, et and etc, varieties of vegetables – broccoli, brinjol, tomatoes, aloe vera, ladies finger, etc.. are grown in the courtyard of Radha.  Palms, areca, plantains, pepper, beetle leaves, leafy vegetables that has grown lush in her backyard.

 

Radha has been engaged in this passion for nearly 30 years. She hails from Marne in Udupi taluk. Her husband the late Vasudev Bhat was a teacher served in different schools at Marne, Moodubelle and Basrikatte. Although the couple was relocating their home depending on the postings, they continued their love for gardens. The couple was living in Kadiyali, Udupi town since 30 years. They have 3 sons and 2 daughters who are employed and have their own homes. Meanwhile, lonely Radha is engaged in gardening to keep jest for living.

Colorful blooms, different scents, variety of textures create a good sensory experience that can help for a healthy living even for older adults of our society. Mrs. Radha V. Bhat is leading by example that gardening is one such hobby which will help her to sustain the zest for healthy living.
