Kambla will be banned only after a detailed study: Minister

 

Mangaluru / Bengaluru, 16 Nov 2014: When the coastal districts of undivided Dakshina Kannada is left in lurch of banning its traditional sport buffalo race game called Kambla, a statement from Law Minister T.B. Jayachandra has relieved the tension of Kambla lovers.

 

Addressing a high level meeting with officials at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru, Law Minister stated that banning Kambla in Udupi is a temporary measure and there is no decision yet on banning the sport. The decision will be taken only after a detailed study on the issue is made.

 

The Deputy Commissioner of Udupi forwarded the circular issued by the Supreme Court of banning Kambla, in the district. The ban came into effect on Saturday, November 15 and will be in force till the end of March 2015.

 

Speaking further minister said "Being a traditional sport of the region we cannot take the decision in hasty. A detailed study will be made and talks will also be held with the Animal Welfare Board of India."

 

The Animal Welfare Board of India had appealed to the Udupi Deputy Commissioner and District Superintendent of Police to ban the sport in the region after presenting it before the Apex Court.
