  • To enhance security and to check crimes, the Udupi police are all set to install CCTV cameras at 15 strategic points in the city.

Udupi, 11 Jun 2013 (DHNS): Superintendent of Police Dr Boralingaiah M B told that the plans have been chalked out to install 15 closed circuit television cameras. “Locations have been identified and towers have been installed. The CCTV cameras will be installed to maintain law and order and check traffic violations. The monitoring system will be in the district police office,” he said.

The strategic points include Diana Circle, Triveni Junction, Malpe Bus stop, Karavali junction, Syndicate circle, Manipal, MGM College, city bus stop and service bus stop.

The Superintendent of Police added that private investors have been asked to associate with the department to install CCTV’s in their respective establishments.

However, the response is very poor. He said the CCTV cameras should be installed in restaurants, hospitals and commercial complexes and there is a need for more than 500 CCTV cameras for the purpose.

Boralingaiah expressed confidence that installing CCTV cameras in major junctions will make the district free of crime to some extent as the device will help to keep a close watch on individuals and vehicles. “Sometimes a crime can be averted before it takes place or the culprit can easily be trapped using the footage from the camera,” he said.

“If housing complexes and apartments install CCTV cameras, robberies can also be reduced. The jewellery shops have also been directed to install cameras inside and outside the shop. The department will persuade them to install cameras,” he said.

At Sri Krishna temple

The SP pointed out that as the number of devotees visiting Sri Krishna temple has been increasing, there is also the need to beef up security in and around the temple. However, department cannot take up entire responsibility with regard to the security of the temple. The seers of Ashta mutt should come forward to support the department in an attempt to strengthen the security.

There is a need for 40 high quality CCTV cameras in Car Street and seers and authorities of the temples have been contacted with regard to the issue. However, the SP said that police have not received any sort of response from their side. The expenditure cost may go up to Rs 1.5 crore as per a survey conducted by the department in association with CISF (Central Industrial Security Force). The police department will convene another round of meeting with the temple authorities shortly.

The CCTV cameras have been installed inside the temple. But the temple authorities should install cameras near Rajangana parking slot and at the major entrances leading towards the temple, said the SP.

Good move. CCTV surveillance is a must today. Hope eventually we will have better roads, adequate public transport, easy payment of utility bills, good operations management at government offices, clean and usable public toilets and thus an improved quality of life for a common man.
