Manipal, 20 April 2013: “The Western-trained scientific mind begins with the concept of deconstruction of any given concept whereas, the Indian investigation has a holistic approach,” said Prof Shrinivasa Varakhedi at the author-reader interaction in the counseling hall of Manipal Edu building here on Friday. At the program, “From the Horse’s Mouth” organized by the Manipal University Press (MUP), he presented his work, the translation of Pramanapaddati, The Path of Proofs published by MUP last year.

On the contributions of Dvaita Philosophy to the Indian epistemological system, he said, the word and world, syntax and semantics, language and meaning, spirit and matter, cognition and content, form and material are distinct but not separate. “Therefore, epistemology cannot be separated from ontology,” he added.

The treatment of epistemology in the strict sense of Western thought does not hold good in the Indian context.  Bringing out the essence of the book, he said, the contributions of Jayatirtha to the Indian dialectics in the form of neologician theories on various debated topics in Indian philosophy are highly commendable.  He appreciated the efforts of MUP in bringing out the philosophical publications related to Dvaita philosophy which took birth in this region.

Dr Vinod Bhat, the Pro Vice Chancellor of Manipal University released the 15th publication of MUP The Ramayana of Valmiki – A Condensed Version of Valmiki’s Epic authored by Prof M R Parameswaran. This is a translation of the Critical Edition of Valmiki Ramayana that was published by Baroda Oriental Research Institute. He said MUP decided to release it on the auspicious occasion of Ramanavami and hoped that MUP would take up many more such works.  He congratulated the author of Ramayana, who is a professor of Mathematics and Sanskrit at the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, Canada.
