Mangalore: Synthetic track work sees setback

Mangalore, 17 Apr 2012: The work related to laying of synthetic track at Mangala stadium has suffered a setback and may not be completed as per schedule in the first week of May.
The coaches and aspirants had been demanding for a synthetic track at Mangala stadium since many years and finally when the track has been granted, the slow pace in execution of work has disappointed this section of people who have been eagerly waiting for the same.
However, a, Experts’ Committee has been formed by the district administration to set right the problems existing in execution of the work.
Deccan Herald during the visit to the Stadium, observed that there was violation of the agreement while laying the track. According to the agreement the entire structure of oval shaped structure should have eight lanes.
There should be a D-shaped space of 24 meters length after the inner two lanes. This D-shaped space will be used for games like javelin, high jump etc.
However, the D-shaped area now measures only 20 metres. The high jump athletes usually begin their run from 20 meters length and if the authorities maintain the present length, the athletes will find it difficult to use the space.
Adding to it is the reduction in the actual width on one side of the eight lane track. Though the total width of the track is supposed to be 10 mts, on one side the track length is 9.76 mts. However, rectification of the same has been taken up.
Coach Vasanth Kumar said that it is better to rectify the error before laying the track cover. Once the track cover is laid nothing can be done, he opined.
The district administration had formed a committee of three experts including former athletes Anand Shetty, Krishna Shenoy and Indian Athletic Federation Technical Committee officer Rajavelu from Bhadravathi.
The expert committee member Krishna Shenoy informed that the error in D-formation has been identified and will be rectified.
