Failed MBBS student’s SMS almost wrecked a day-old marriage

Police used a special software to trick the culprit and nab him, and also helped the couple salvage the marriage. 70 more women claimed to be victims of the accused

 

Santosh and Priya (name changed) were ecstatic on their wedding day, but by night their dreams had turned to dust. They wanted to end their marriage. And this is what triggered it: A message on Priya’s phone saying, ‘Come tomorrow to the same park’. 

 

Santosh, a well-settled financier, agreed to marry Priya on his parent’s suggestion. But the text message on his wedding night was a shocker and turned his world upside down.

 

A shocked Priya tried to convince her husband about her innocence but he was in no mood to listen. He confided in his parents the next day and they, in turn, told Priya’s parents who knew their daughter well.

 

When she didn’t have an explanation for the message, her parents marched off to J P Nagar police station and filed a complaint.

Understanding the seriousness of the issue, station inspector S K Umesh decided to get to the truth. In four days’ time, he discovered that the person behind the message was a failed MBBS student.

 

Profile of a pervert:

Vinod Ramaiah (23) of Anekal was a student of A G Institute of Medical Sciences, a college in Mangalore. He didn’t prepare for his fourth semester exams and failed in January 2011.

 

Returning home, he found that he had plenty of time and money on his hands. He was good at English and started sending messages to women. He would introduce himself as an MBBS student and send out innocent messages at first. Once the woman in question started responding, he would ask to meet. At first, he enjoyed the conversations, but soon started getting bolder with women who fell for his sweet words and fake love.

 

With no real friends, he started looking for numbers, especially of couples and women working in software companies. Vinod became more vulgar by the day and his messages to women filthier.

 

Women getting the messages would be shocked and as they wondered how to deal with the dilemma, Vinod would move on to another woman. Some women, however, complained to the police. In all, 70 women approached JP Nagar police station and inspector Umesh took up the case as a challenge.

 

Tracing the culprit:

Umesh relied on technique rather than police strength to nail the culprit. He and his team downloaded a software which changed a male voice to female. On Sunday morning, police started calling Vinod using the software and succeeded in getting him to come to BTM Park in J P Nagar.

 

Vinod, prepared to meet a woman, was shocked when he saw the police team instead. They caught him and took him to the station where he confessed that he had taken numbers from mobile repair shops and sent out lewd messages because he was curious about married women.

 

Inspector Umesh said, “He is not an ordinary offender because he was playing with emotional issues. Because of him, many women came close to splitting with their husbands. It is good lesson for youngsters who do the wrong thing despite knowing its wrong.”

 

Incidentally, police also managed to save Santosh and Priya’s marriage.
