Karwar, 21 September 2011: Sixteen heads of cattle were killed at Hosagadde village in Ankola taluk on Monday night when they came under the Mumbai-Kerala superfast train.

This had affected the movement of Mumbai-Mangalore Vegadoot train for a few hours.

According to the sources, about 40 cattle were standing on the railway track while the accident took place. The torsos of many buffalos were separated from the body in the accident and were recovered from a distance of about 500 metres.

The driver of the train reportedly informed the Madanageri station about the accident and proceeded with the journey.

The farmers of the Hosagadde village were mainly dependent on cattle for agricultural activities and milk. Many people were seen grieving on the accident spot. When the railway officials reached the spot, the farmers refused to admit their ownership of the cattle fearing that the officials would impose a fine on the owner of the cattle.

The spot was cleared by railway authorities using special earth movers.
