Mangalore: Fish-landing area at Bunder is filthy

Mangalore, 08 September 2011: It is difficult to walk through the fish landing area in Bunder as it is strewn with fish waste and dirt.

 

The drains are choked with waste. On Wednesday, two fisherwomen were seen picking ice from the ground that was dirty. They were collecting ice in garbage bags apparently for re-use.

 

 

Suresh Kumar Ullal, Deputy Director of Fisheries, said that work was on to clean the area and it would be clean in one month. Drains next to the fisheries office had been cleaned. All the drains would be cleaned, he said.

Demonstrations on how to maintain hygiene were organised periodically by the KFDC, but fishermen did not bother to keep the place clean, he said.

 

S.M. Shivaprakash, professor, Department of Fisheries Resource Management, College of Fisheries, said that a hoarding to stress the importance of cleanliness at the landing area would be unveiled on Thursday. Prof. Shivaprakash, who is principal investigator of “Creating awareness on Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations code of conduct for responsible fisheries in coastal Karnataka”, said that the project had selected 16 fish landing centres in the State from Mangalore to Karwar. At eight of these centres, awareness programmes had been held through street plays, exhibitions, and film shows.

 

Thirty hoardings would be installed at these fish landing centres, he said.
