Students toil to make M’lore clean, green

Mangalore, 26 June 2011: ‘Amala Bharatha Campaign’ is taken up every fourth Sunday of the month.

 

When the city is mostly lazing on Sunday morning, the students from Amritha Vidyalaya and Karnataka Ayurvedic Medical College put all efforts to give Mangalore a clean and green look by participating in the nationwide cleanliness drive, ‘Amala Bharatha Campaign’ launched by Matha Amrithanandamayi Math.

 

The programme in Mangalore was coordinated by Matha Amrithanandamayi Seva Samithi, Bolur. Every fourth Sunday of the month, the Seva Samithi is coordinating cleaning drive with the help of students.

 

“In foreign countries, we can see how efficiently people are taking care of their surroundings. But in our country, the situation is quite different. We are keeping our houses clean and we throw the waste outside,” said Matha Amrithanandamayi Seva Samithi Honorary President Dr Jeevaraj Sorake.

 

“We need to change this habit. If we can follow the rules when we are visiting foreign countries, why can’t we do the same here?” he asked and added that the only way to achieve this is by creating awareness among the public.

 

The Samithi is welcoming the school and college students for the programme. Students who participated in the drive cleaned the city from Urwa Market till Sultan Battery.

 

The Mangalore City Corporation also took part in the campaign by sending corporation vehicles for use.

 

Mangalore City Police also expressed their readiness to involve in the project.

 

“We want to have the involvement of all the sections of the society in this campaign. It is essential for the success of the campaign. We are ready to provide all facilities like garbage bins, cleaning equipments, aprons for the volunteers,” said Dr Sorake.

 

The Amrithanandamayi Seva Samithi has also decided to build modern toilets for public use in different parts of the city.

 

The campaign also ensures the recycling of possible waste materials.

 

The Samithi is also planning to seek help from the corporators for the campaign. The campaign was launched in Mangalore four months back.

 

The volunteers and Seva Samithi are showing a fine example to follow for people who believe in work and not in words.
