Nelyadi: 5 killed in car-tanker collision

Nelyadi (Dakshina Kannada dt), 24 April 2011: Five persons were killed on the spot and seven sustained grievous injuries when a tanker rammed into a MUV at Lavathadka near Nelyadi on NH-48 on Saturday.
According to police, the deceased have been identified as Bhoja Shetty (85), Rathi Shetty (60), Shambhavi Shetty (45), MUV driver Guruprasad Bhat (38), all residents of Kallamundkoor in Karkala taluk and tanker driver Kannan (64) from Salem.
The injured Rohini Shetty (40), Vasanth Shetty (45), Aniketh Shetty (10), Santhosh Alva (18), Arthik Rai (15), Karthik Alva (12), and Mohan Shetty (52) have been admitted to hospitals in Mangalore.
Impact
The tanker hit the MUV with such a speed that the vehicle was dragged for a distance of over 50 metre. Police had to struggle for over one hour to extricate the bodies from the mangled remains of the vehicle. It was said that Bhoja Shetty and his family were on their way to Dharmasthala after performing ‘Sarpa samskara’ in Subrahmanya.
The traffic on Mangalore-Bangalore NH 48 came to a grinding halt for three hours due to the accident. Vehicles had piled up for two kilometre on either side. Senior police officers visited the spot.
