Sanjay Dutt allowed to take mattress, shampoo, mosquito repellent in jail

 

Mumbai, 16 May 2013:  Actor Sanjay Dutt is allowed to take inside the jail his mattress, pillow, copy of Hanuman Chalisa, Ramayan, Bhagvad Gita and his own toiletries including toothpaste, shampoo, slippers, kurta pyjama and mosquito repellent and a fan.

 

The court did not allow him to take cigarettes not even electronic cigarettes. Special judge GA Sanap told Dutt when he appeared in the box a little after 4pm. "I am allowing your everything except cigarettes." And then added with a smile, "stop it (the cigarette smoking)."

 

Dutt was asked how many days has he served in jail. Pat came his reply, "551 days". He has been given 5 years’ rigorous imprisonment by the Supreme Court which had reduced one year from original sentence of 6 years’ rigorous imprisonment for his conviction under the Arms Act for possessing an AK-56 rifle.

 

Earlier, Dutt surrendered along with 4 others, Kersi Adjania (82), Altaf Hussain (50), Yusuf Malwalla (63), Essa Memon, brother of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon. The court has taken them all in custody.

 

The convicts Essa Memon, Kersi Adjania, Yusuf Nulwala and Altaf Sayyed Shaikh surrendered as the Supreme Court had rejected their appeals against conviction.

 

Judge GA Sanap allowed Memon, Adjania and Nulwala to take medicines in jail.

 

Two other convicts, Zebunisa Kazi and Sharif (Dada) Parkar, are likely to surrender on Friday.

 

Essa is the brother of prime absconding accused Tiger Memon. He is suffering from brain tumour and had earlier refused to get operated. A Tada court had sentenced him to life imprisonment and the apex court had confirmed the punishment awarded to him.

 

83-year-old Kersi, who had destroyed the AK-56 rifle possessed by Sanjay Dutt, in his workshop, was awarded one-year jail term. He has already spent three to four months in jail.

 

Nulwala had picked up the AK-56 rifle from the house of Sanjay Dutt as per the instructions of the actor and given the weapon to Kersi to destroy it. Nulwala was awarded a five-year term, of which he has already spent 18 months in jail.

 

Altaf Shaikh was convicted for possessing hand grenades in notified area of TADA. He was awarded five years’ imprisonment.
