Lucknow, 17 April 2011: Sonu Sinha, the athlete who lost her leg in a train accident, has made a huge gesture by taking decision to donate all the money she has received so far for medical aid and support to her sports academy. Sonu, also know as Arunima, said that she wants to donate the entire aid she has received to her Sports College.

Arunima Sinha, a national level football and volleyball player, lost her leg last week after she was pushed out of a train by three men trying to snatch her gold chain. After the incident the Indian Railways promised her a job in the department.

Apart from receiving cash donations from not just the state and central governments and politicians, but also cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Harbhajan Singh. Both the cricketers had offered an aid of one-lakh rupees each.

Arunima’s mother hopes the government grants her daughter the job, as Arunima wants to start a sports academy of her own. “I hope the government grants her a job as she wants to start a Sports College to aid others sports persons like her. I Hope that dream gets fulfilled,” said Arunima’s mother.

Arunima Sinha alias Sonu, who lost her leg after being pushed from a moving train, may have to undergo a surgery due to infection in the severed limb, hospital sources said here. "During the examination of Sonu, who was admitted, it was detected that her amputated left leg has swelling and infection which may require further surgery for treatment," said the sources at Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University, where Arunima was shifted yesterday.

As of now the dead tissues were removed, wound cleaned and fresh dressing was done, they said. "Though her condition is stable, but due to excessive bleeding Sonu’s haemoglobin level has gone down fairly due to which transfusion was done last night," the sources said.

Sonu’s case is that of amputation below the knee and she has been kept in high-dependency ward, they added. The 23-year-old player was earlier undergoing treatment at Bareilly district hospital where she was admitted on April 12, a day after being thrown out of the Padmavat Express by three men trying to rob her when she was travelling to Delhi to appear for an examination.

The police had lodged an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to robbery) of the IPC. Sonu was shifted to Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University yesterday for further treatment.
