Udupi, 4 Apr 2013: A small town that lies in the limits of Ucchila Bada gram panchayat, near Padubidri, here likely to become a dumping yard for solid waste.
The authorities of Ucchila Bada gram panchayat has not identified a plot to dump solid waste, since disposal of solid waste was not a problem so far, as the residents were disposing their household waste in their premises.
However, a member of a organization has began a cleaning drive in Ucchila village and dumped the waste after digging a pond nearby poultry farm and put on ablaze. Since then, it has become a full scale dumping yard thereby creating a garbage menace in the locality.
A local person began collecting the household waste from each house in his tempo and dumps at the same spot and that he charges Rs 100 per month for this service. The dump yard now has huge pile of garbage endangering environment and posing health hazard.
Whenever the pile gets larger, someone lights the fire and the smoke and stench becomes unbearable for the local shopkeepers and passengers waiting at the nearby bus stand.
The Panchayat Development Officer (PDO) Pratapchandra Shetty said that no contract was given to collect the garbage. The local who collects the garbage was instructed to dispose the same. The panchayat administration will take action on him for not disposing off the garbage efficiently.
