’Shooting Stars – 2013’ held at St. Aloysius College Mangalore

Mangalore, 16 March 2013: The annual National level Film and Documentary making competition ‘Shooting Stars – 2013’ was held at the IT block auditorium of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore on Saturday , March 16, 2013. This event provides a platform for student film makers to screen their movies to a student gathering.

 

The event was inaugurated by renowned Radio Jockey Vishwas Kamath. The vice principal of Arts block, Mrs. Judith Pinto; the coordinator of Mass Communication and Media Studies, Mr. Vishal Nayak and the HOD of Journalism, Ms. Bhavya Shetty were present.

 

 

The Keynote address was delivered by the chief guest of the day, Mr. Vishwas Kamath who also conducted the workshop on Radio jockeying.  He spoke to the gathering about his experience in the world of Radio jockeying and stressed on the importance of radio in the present day scenario. He opened up the minds of the budding journalists to the field of Radio hosting. Apart from that, he spoke about the various aspects of radio programmes and presented to the students the art of creative writing for radio jingles and advertisements.

 

Various short films and documentaries were screened after RJ Vishwas’ workshop. These short films and documentaries were shot by students of various colleges from all over India. These movies were based on unique and original ideas of the students themselves. Themes like Dreams, Importance of Agriculture, Saving the Girl Child, Friendship, Love, Ill-Effects of Drug Abuse, the Indian Economy and many others were displayed through the near professional cinematography of the directors and expertise of the cameramen.

The valedictory program was graced by the presence of one of the eminent theatre artist and Radio Jockey, Vismay Vinayak; Rev. Fr. Swebert D’silva, the Principal of the host college; The convener of the event, Ms. Bhavya Shetty; the Co-Convener Ms. Jayalakshmi Alva and Student Co-ordinator, Abdul Rahiman were present on the occasion.

 

Mr. Vismay brought laughter among the gathering through his humor in speech and also by enacting some of his drama scenes. He spoke about the technical difficulties faced by film makers. He also appreciated the work done by regional film makers and predicted that soon, the student film makers would achieve great success.

 

Rev. Fr. Swebert D’silva emphasized upon the contribution of extra-curricular activities towards a wholesome growth of the students. He also mentioned that he was delighted by the fact that youngsters made movies based on pressing social issues.

 

A total of 21 videos were screened in the event which included 12 short films and 9 documentaries. And the awards were given by Mr. Vismay himself to the winners. The winners according to the category are:

 

Best Documentary:

1st place – “Toys” by Hari Krishna, Pondicherry University.

2nd place – “Shades of Green” by Dept. of MCMS, St. Xavier’s College, Goa.

 

Best Theme (Special Award):

1 – “Masanada Munnudi” by Parikshith, SDM College, Ujire.

2 – “MRP?” by Satish R, Pondicherry.

 

Best Short Film:

1st place– “Kadhaikul Kadhai” by Hari Iyer, SRM College, Chennai.

 2nd place– “Fate” by Mohammed Shaffir, St. Aloysius College, Mangalore.
