New vented dam to be ready by next year: Palemar

Mangalore, 14 February 2011: If all goes well as per the plan, then the second vented dam which is being constructed across Netravati river in Thumbe would supply drinking water facilities to Haleyangadi, Moodushedde, Chelaru, Mala, Mulki, Neerumarga and Saripalla by next year. 

 

Informing same to the mediapersons after offering ‘bagina’ to river Netravati at Thumbe on Monday, District-in-Charge Minister Krishna J Palemar said the new dam of seven meters height will have the capacity to store 14.70 million cubic meters water, which is much higher than the water storage capacity of the existing vented dam. The existing dam has the capacity to store 9 MCM water. However, the water storage capacity has been reduced to 4.50 MCM due to silt, said Palemar.

 

No water shortage

 

The minister said that there is no problem in supplying drinking water to the city for the next three months. Thumbe dam is full and the water can be reserved for the next three months.

 

On the water leakage in the existing dam, he said the contractors will be directed to check the leakage at the earliest.

 

For the purpose of supplying water to the industries, talks are on to supply water to the city from Lakya dam, he added.

 

Mangalore City Corporation  Commissioner Dr K N Vijayaprakash said a survey has been completed to introduce 24X7 water supply project in MCC limits. The project supported by Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation (KUIDFC) will be introduced in four or five MCC wards on pilot basis. Later, a final decision will be taken.

 

He also said that 70 per cent of the work related to the drainage in the city limits has been completed. The pending  work will be completed by June, he added.
