Mumbai, 19 Aug 2013 : On behalf every resident of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada (DK) districts who have settled all over the country and as a true Indian, I specifically state that I strongly oppose the proposed ultra mega thermal power plant in the neighbourhood of Niddodi in DK district.  I would like to specify a few reasons among several in opposing the proposed power plant, said Vishwanat U Mada, chairman of national human rights Center – Maharashtra and former president of Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti.

Addressing the media persons , here on Sunday August 18, Mada said that both Karnataka state and union committee failed to identify the basic interests of natives who are living in the vicinity of Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) power plant in Nandikoor.  In spite of Jayasrikrishna Parisara Premi Samiti (JSKPPS) several times reminded the the district administration, discussed the issue with the then CMs and several former ministers, both state and union Committees have failed to identify their lapses.  The effluents discharged from the power plant are polluting the water bodies and threat to livestock. It has been causing havoc on the people living in the vicinity and the coast.  It has been health hazard for both people and cattle.  Nagarjuna Power Corporation who executed the contract of setting up of coal based power plant for UPCL had signed an agreement with JSKPPS that the Nagarajuna Power Corporation will put in place all the latest machinery that would minimize the impact on eco-environment.  Therefore, JSKPPS supported UPCL with the aspiration of creating jobs for local youth and to fulfill the energy needs of undivided DK district, said Mada.

Karnataka state and union Committee failed to install desulfurization plant at the power plant and failed to obtain valid license by not able to fulfill over 100 norms or conditions.  All the norms are limited to papers and the entire departments were happy for the weight of the papers rather than reality.  None of them ever bothered to understand the interests of locals or not bothered at all.  The state government too failed to understand the locals concerns.  The government has failed to implement the agreement, conserve eco-environment, to award suitable housing to displaced families, to address the grievances on flying ashes, noise pollution, releasing effluents into farmer’s fields, major health woes.  First of all, the grievances of peasants living in the vicinity fo UPCL had to be addressed.  Further course of action follows only after this above task is accomplished, said Mada.
