Shirva, 20 July 2012: “It is a pleasure to listen to Indian musical instruments when they are accompanied by “raga”, “tala” and “laya”. Those students who have interest in music should learn and practice Indian classical music. Indian musical instruments have their own “language”. A single instrument can produce variety of “ragas”. Students should come forward and practice Indian musical instruments to have a mind blowing experience”, said sitar maestro Ustad Rafiq Khan of international fame. He was demonstrating Indian classical music and use of Indian musical instruments to the students of St Mary’s High School, Shirva under the auspices of “Parichaya – Pambooru” supported by Sangeetha Bharathi Foundation, Mangalore.
The demonstration was held on Thursday 19th July at Shirva Saud meeting hall. He further said that the craze for western music by Indian youth should be diverted and channelled towards our own Indian classical music and musical instruments. That is the main purpose of this demonstration. He demonstrated to the students how one single instrument can produce multiple “ragas” by playing “Raghupathi Raghava Rajaram” and “Bhagyada Laxmi Baramma” on his Sitar to the delight of the students. Also P.K. Santhosh Kannur, Rajesh Bhagawath Mulky and Riju Palghat played “morsing”, “thabla” and “ghata” respectively to show to the students the beauty of playing Indian musical instruments.
High School pupils’ leader Devendra Nayak welcomed the gathering. “Parichaya” president Anil D’sa, Secretary Prakash Noronha, Public relations director B. Pundalika Marathe, Violet Castelino, Madhusudana Rao, Ignatius D’souza, Lucas D’souza, and Janet Noronha, teachers Gilbert Pinto, Clara Coutinho and Flavy Furtado were present among the audience. “Parichaya” programme co-ordinator Mable Menezes compeered and also proposed vote of thanks.
