World Environmental Day Celebrations at Manipal University

Manipal, 05 June 2012: Manipal University, which has the second best green campus among institutions in the country, celebrated the World Environment Day on Tuesday by planting 70 medicinal saplings . Of these 60 were planted in Madhav Vihar and 10 in Kasturba Hospital. Another 900-odd will be planted over a period of two months.
To begin the day’s function, some 480 primary and high school children 120 university students took part in an awareness rally flagged off by Deputy Commissioner of Udupi, Dr M.T.Reju at the University building. The students then marched to the amphitheater in Madhav Vihar where saplings were planted and messages on Environment Day by different speakers.
At the University building, where the rally started, Pro Chancellor, Dr H.S. Ballal welcomed Dr Reju and spoke briefly on the University’s role in maintaining the campus green and therefore a good environment. The deputy commissioner exhorted the students on the importance of eco-friendly environment.

At the amphitheater, Mr M.V.Kamath, honorary director of Manipal Institute of Communication spoke on the significance of saving water, saving trees and contributing towards the preservation of environment. Vijetha Shetty, a student of Kamala Bai High School, Udupi delivered a message on environment and Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Udupi Environment Officer, Mr Rajshekhar Puranik spoke on ways to protect the environment.
