M’lore: Customs of City Int’l Airport seize gold pieces worth Rs 23.50 lac from Dubai Pa

Mangalore, 20 Sep 2014: The officers of customs at Mangalore International Airport (MIA) again busted an unique modus operandi of gold smuggling and seized gold totally weighing 878.000 grams in 2 separate cases valued at Rs 23,48,650.
In the first case, the officers seized gold in the form of wire rods, beads, pieces in assorted sizes and shapes totally weighing 436.000 grams and valued at Rs 11,66,300 concealed in watch straps, toy cars, pen refills, electric plugs, key chain, magnetic wrist band, fancy chain/bracelet, alarm clock, zip holder(puller) of bag pack etc., which were kept and brought in checked in baggage, from the possession of a passenger - Mohammed Ashraf Parakatta, residing at Ashit Manzil, 204 AC, 9/314A, Kudlu Post, Kasargod District of Kerala, who arrived at MIA on Saturday September 20 at about 04.45am by Air India Express flight No IX 814 from Dubai.
In a similar modus operandi on the same day, the officers seized gold in the form of wire rods, beads, pieces in assorted sizes and shapes, totally weighing 442.000 grams and valued at Rs 11,82,350 concealed in watch straps, toy cars, pen refills, electric plugs, key chain, magnetic wrist band, fancy chain/bracelet, alarm clock etc., which were kept in the checked in baggage, from the possession of another passenger - Suhaib Thalangara Mohamood, residing at Kadavath, Thalangara Post, Kasargod District of Kerala, who arrived at MIA on Saturday September 20 at about 08.15am by Jet Airways flight No 9W531 from Dubai.
The operations were conducted under the supervision of Krishna Kumar Prasad, deputy commissioner of customs, MIA. Further investigation is under progress in the above said cases.
