Chathapuram, 22 September 2010: Tension prevailed for more than three hours in the Chathapuram-Kalpathy-Shekaripuram areas of the town on Tuesday as the elephant `Chathapuram Babu’ ran amok. The Tusker that was taken by its two Mahouts to collect palm leafs became wild and tried to attack them and ran amok.
The elephant ran through the streets of Chathapuram, Kalpathy and Sekharapuram in the town creating scare among the people in the area. Though the Mahouts tried to bring it under control the elephant became more wild seeing them near to him. The elephant tried to scare away the people and the Mahouts who tried to tie it to a tree.
Though the service of a veterinary doctor was commissioned for tranqulizing the elephant to bring it under control it became calm once its owner Sree Devi of Chathapuram came to the scene. She asked the Mahouts to clear away from the scene and brought the Elephant under control, feeding it with banana and jaggery.
The Elephant became calm and obeyed the orders of its owner. Later the elephant was tied to a tree at Chathapuram by her. But for more than three hours in the mid-noon the Elephant created scare in the area trying to attack people and uprooting trees on the way side. The local people said that the elephant rank amok after it was beaten up by one of the Mahouts.
So once again it has been proved that on many occasions it is due to the torture by the Mahouts that the Elephants go amok. Even when the Elephant go wild it could be brought under control by its tendering owner as it happened at Chathapuram on Tuesday.
