Udupi, 27 Jul 2013: In the wake of the infamous gang-rape incident that rocked Manipal, the district administration has been seriously considering measures to enhance security.
The Deputy Commissioner (DC) Dr M T Reju convened a meeting with the district officials, representatives of Manipal University, CMC members, auto union and heads of other associations to discuss the issue.
During the meeting, it was decided to set up 10 traffic monitoring points in the limits of Manipal University and also to install closed circuit (CC) cameras at several points. Besides, the district administration decided to install proper lights and provide unique identification number to all the auto rickshaws in order to regulate and curb any untoward incident in the area again.
Manipal University plans to drop students to their houses and hostels by security vehicle after library hours. ‘We will provide security vehicles to drop all students from the library to their respective houses after 10 pm,’ said Dr G K Prabhu, registrar of Manipal University, adding that they have increased patrolling in the campus, especially in the night hours with additional assistance from police.
Notice to all bars
The DC issued instructions to excise and revenue officials, in order to draw the shutters of bars and restaurants that stay open beyond the permitted time.
