Udupi, 16 December 2010: Udupi-Chikmagalur MP D.V. Sadananda Gowda and president of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) district unit Udaykumar Shetty released the first list of the party’s candidates for zilla and taluk panchayat elections here on Wednesday.
Of the 25 seats in the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, the BJP had released the names of candidates for 12 seats.
Only two were members of the outgoing zilla panchayat — Upendra Nayak and Nayana Ganesh. .
The remaining nine candidates were new faces due to some seats getting reserved. The glaring omission in the list was the name of the president of the outgoing zilla panchayat, Gladys Almeida, who had won on the BJP ticket from Yellur in 2005. Ms. Almeida became Udupi Zilla Panchayat president contesting as BJP rebel candidate with the help of the Congress on August 26, 2009. “Her act of indiscipline has worked against her,” Mr. Shetty said.
Mr. Gowda said the second list of candidates would be finalised within two days.
Mr. Gowda said: “We are confident of winning 18 to 20 seats We will win all the three taluk panchayats of Udupi, Kundapur and Karkala.”
