"Combing Kudla with Pens and Brushes" Exhibition of Mangaluru heritage drawings inaugurated

Mangaluru, 20 May 2024: The Mangaluru Chapter of the Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), in association with Art Kanara Trust, is presenting an exhibition showcasing the heritage of Mangaluru through sketches developed by five artists from Dakshina Kannada. Titled "Combing Kudla with Pens and Brushes," the exhibition will be open to the public until May 25, 2024, at the Kodialguthu Centre for Art and Culture, G.G. Road, Ballalbagh, Mangaluru, from 11 am to 7 pm.

 

 

Jayanth Kodkani, writer and former Associate Editor of The Times of India, Bengaluru, graced the inauguration ceremony on Saturday, May 18, at 5:30 pm. Sharing an anecdote narrated by Booker Prize-winning author Aravind Adiga, who hails from this city, Mr. Kodkani highlighted the rapid transformation of Mangaluru and the vital need to preserve its heritage. “Illustrations created by artists serve as documents, archives, and records of how the city has evolved,” he said.

 

The exhibition showcases the works of five artists: Harish Kodialbail, Jeevan Salian, Santhosh Andrade, Syed Asif Ali, and Wilson Souza. These works were specially created as part of the "Sketching Heritage" project, launched in September 2022 on the occasion of World River Day, to document and preserve the heritage of Mangaluru. The collection features spot drawings and sketches from over 40 heritage sites and landmarks of Mangaluru. Commemorative postcards and personal notebooks bearing a selection of the sketches are available for sale. Copies of the illustrated booklet, "Chennu: Mangaluru City Profile," are also available.

 

Subhas Chandra Basu, Convener of the INTACH Mangalore Chapter, introduced the programme. The artists were also felicitated during the function.
