Udupi, 16 January 2011: The four prisoners who are involved in the murder of undertrial prisoner Vinodh Shettigar have been shifted to Belgaum jail following District Judge Narendrakumar Gunaki’s order to avoid further untoward incidents in the Udupi district sub-jail.
Meanwhile, Jailor Ambekar had approached District Court for a precautionary measure to maintain peace in the jail premises.
Speaking to DySP Jayanth Shetty informed that thorough preliminary investigation is going on. The accused will be interrogated only after court’s order issued on Monday or Tuesday. The four accused Brahmavara Nagraj, Koppala Sharanappa, Mysore Sheik Riyaz, Brahmavara Mutthappa will be produced before the court on Monday. The initial reason according to the accused is that Vinodh Shettigar was troubling these four very often. However, the truth will be known only after indepth interrogation. Negligence on part of jail authorities is clearly visible in the scenario, he added.
Negligence alleged
He informed that it has been acknowledged through first round investigation that the knives used for murder are not from jail kitchen.
It has been brought from outside. If the inmates are loyal to the jail authorities, the jail authorities don’t conduct any sort of security check when the inmates are taken outside or brought in from outside, it is said. The prisoners are taken to court and some times for medical check up. The jail authorities are supposed to check thoroughly. If they would have carried out their job, they could have avoided this grave incident, he added.
Brahmavara Circle Inspector Krishnamurthy has been appointed as Investigative Officer.
Nearly 20 to 30 eye witnesses in the jail were questioned on Saturday, Shetty informed.
