Felicitation of Catholic women members of Grama Panchayats of the Udupi Varado

Udupi, 3 August 2010: In the Grama Panchayat election held in 2009, those Catholic women who had contested and won the elections as the members of their respective Grama Panchayat within Udupi Varado were honoured on Saturday, 31 July 2010 in the Don Bosco Hall, Udupi by the Catholic Women Council of the Udupi Varado. From Moodubelle Mrs. Jacintha Aranha (Edmeru), Mrs. Jacintha D’Souza (Kuntalnagar), Mrs. Winnie D’Souza (Kuntalnagar and Mrs. Winnifred D’Souza (Marne) were felicitated during this occasion.

Rev. Fr. Mathew Vaz, the Vicarvaar of the Udupi Varado presided over the function.  Mrs. Gladys D’Almeida was the chief guest of the function and Ms. Remedia D’Souza, a veteran political activist was the gust of honour.

Delivering his presidential address, Rev. Fr. Mathew Vaz said that more and more Christian women should not only enter the political field but also take up leadership. It is high time that Christians should give up the mindset of considering politics as ‘dirty’ and should enter politics so that they can serve people irrespective of their religion and community.
