Udupi,03 Apr 2013: Some miscreants pelted stones on Jumma mosque located at Nejar near here on Tuesday April 2 night. As a result, the window glasses and auditorium was damaged in stone pelting by miscreants. The district police deployed additional security at the location to avoid further trouble.
It may be recalled that similar incident took place at the mosque here on November 26, 2008 during Mumbai terror attack, but no actions were taken so far in this regard.
In another incident, local resident thirty-year-old Iqbal was allegedly attacked by a group of 20 persons while he was returning home after attending a nuptial ceremony at Kelanejaru. The incident took place at around 10.30pm on Tuesday.
Iqbal who was beaten up badly by the miscreants with a rod is now admitted to district government hospital. Iqbal later said that the miscreants left the place telling him that they would also beat up his two other friends Umar and Riyaz. However, there is no mention of the threat in the police complaint.
The police arrested Sathish Nayak, gram panchayat president along with Praveen and Prashanth related to the incident. The arrested are said to be the activists of Sangh Parivar as well as from BJP. It is learned that four other accused are absconding.
Malpe sub-inspector Jayant M informed media persons that the miscreants who attacked Iqbal were returning from the same function, and were drunk. After assaulting Iqbal, they stopped near the mosque and pelted stones. However, the assault on Iqbal is said to be out of an enmity and has no connection with the attack on the mosque. More details will be revealed only after the investigation,informed police sources.
Malpe police registered a case in this regard.
