Doha, 03 May 12010: The Mangalore Cricket Club (MCC), Qatar lifted the coveted ’Qatar Airways Trophy’ in Division 2 of the Qatar Airways Cricket Tournament organised by the Qatar Cricket Association (QCA), the finals of which were held on Friday, 29 April, 2010 at the QCA gounds, Lusail.
It was a superb tournament for the MCC team who excelled with an unbeaten streak of 8 consecutive wins and then winning the trophy in the finals by defeating Sports & Scribes (S&S), reaching the target of 231 runs by losing just seven wickets in 35 of the allotted 40 overs. MCC bowlers, especially the spinners, had earlier restricted S&S to 231 all out in the 37th over.
MCC’s batsmen Sayed (53), Sunny (45), Sandeep (35), Imran (16), Francis (9) Shakir (23 not out) and Denzil (2 not out) played superbly and reached the summit fairly easily. Captain Sunil, who was instrumental in winning the semi finals with a knock of 99 runs, scored a hard hitting 12.
Sayed Wasem was declared Man of the Match for his wonderful performance of 2 wickets and a knock of 53 runs. It was a treat to all the supporters who came to witness the match and to cheer their teams and were given a treat for the eyes and were never disappointed.
At the Awards ceremony that was conducted by Qatar Cricket Association Management and Qatar Airways Management, Captain Sunil D’Almeida received the winner’s trophy on the team’s behalf.
In the semi finals which were played on Friday 21 April, MCC had defeated the ’Punishers XI’ in a nail biting match tasting success by Denzill scoring the required 6 runs with a sixer in the penultimate ball. Earlier Captain Sunil had scored 99 runs with 6 sixers and 6 boundaries.
