Mumbai, (RBI), September 01: A son of a daily wage laborer in a coffee plantation became the VC of Mangalore University with the guidance and support of a teacher who taught him in the past, Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof. PL Dharma said.
Speaking at a function held for the chancellor and his teachers held at a private hotel in the city on Sunday, he said that the education and guidance given by the teachers in my childhood enlightened the path of my life.
Mangalore University Chancellor Prof P.L. Dharma’s name was Chandra when he was studying in fourth standard in Margoli, there were four students named Chandra in his class. The teacher Krishna Bhatt noticed that Chandra was getting more marks than the rest of the students and told his mother that Chandra’s name should be changed as there is a possibility that Chandra’s marks could go to someone else in the future. The mother agreed to this and came to Dharamsthala and gave the name Dharma instead of Chandra’s name. Prof. that it became permanent PL Dharma informed about his name change.
On this occasion Prof Krishna Bhatt couple who were primary school teachers to PL Dharma and Elvira Philomena who was a lecturer at PUC were honored along with the VCs. On this occasion, Professor of Fisheries University Dr Sivakumar Magada, retired professor Sivaprakash, K.K. Various dignitaries including Pejavara spoke.
