Udupi, 07 Apr 2023: Vidhyarthi Durbar, a very regular and popular programme, of the Students was once again organized on 6th April at 1 pm under the mango tree by Milagres College Kallianpur, Udupi, with a very special guest, Ms Pavitra. The purpose of the program was to create awareness among the students about draconian Breast taxation which began in Kerala in 1729. According to this system, a girl had to pay tax to the government if she wanted to cover her breast. This practice came to an end in 1924 when a girl called Nangeli, who belonged to Eelava community in Kerala, cut her breast and gave it in the form of tax.
Ms. Pavithra Chikkanakod, an engineer of RoboSoft Pvt.Ltd. was invited as the chief guest of the program, performed mono act on this Nangali’s story which not only created awareness but also inspired the students.
Ms. Dhanya K Hebbar was the master of ceremony, Principal Dr. Vincent Alva thanked the guest by presenting her with a memento.
The program was successful as it sowed the seeds of fighting spirits for girl’s just rights and their dignity as well as safety in the society among the students, who watched the live performance with curiosity and interest.
