Mangaluru, 28 Sep: Dakshina Kannada district has ancient temples and other historical monuments including vast shoreline. It has huge potential for untapped tourism, said DK district-in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.
Srinivas was speaking after inaugurating World Tourism Day that was jointly organized by district administration, tourism department, Canara Chamber of Commerce and Industry, DK Hotel and Restaurant Association at Town Hall, here on Friday, September 27. It was themed, Tourism and Employment: Bright future to all.
He also said, ‘Beach tourism, boat houses ferrying tourists in backwater will create revenues and jobs. The state administration has released Rs 500 crore to develop tourism spots in coastal district,’ Srinivas said.
MLA Vedavyas Kamat said beach festivals and river festivals have potentials for tourism. The coastal district has many tiny islands that can be developed as tourist spots. Meanwhile, the tourism information should be made available to tourists at railway stations, bus terminus and airports. With due initiative, the tourism department can make DK the favored tourist destination in the world map,’ said Vedavyas.
DK zilla panchayat president Meenakshi Shantigodu, MLC Ivan D’Souza, ADC M J Roopa, Mangaluru municipal commissioner Ajit Kumar Hegde, Canara Chamber of Commerce and Industry president Isaac Vaz, DK Hotel and Restaurant Association president Kudpi Jagdish Shenoy, tourism assistant director Dr Uday Shetty were present.
