Mangaluru, 18 May: With the city police creating a green corridor to Mangaluru International Airport, Indiana Hospital and Heart Institute, here, sent the heart valves and the liver of a 48-year-old man, who was declared brain dead, from Kasaragod to Bengaluru on Friday. One of his kidneys was sent to a private hospital in Manipal.
According to a press release from the institute, Chandrashekar was admitted to the hospital on May 11 following an accident. He succumbed to his injuries and was declared brain dead on May 16.
Following approval from Mr. Chandrashekar’s wife Nagaveni, the institute, in coordination with Jeeva Sarthakathe, the nodal agency of the State for Transplantation of Human Organs Act of 1994, followed the necessary procedure and protocols to harvest the eyes, the heart valves, the liver, and both kidneys.
The hospital sent the liver and heart valves for transplantation to the recipients at Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru by a 5.30 p.m. flight.
A kidney was sent for transplantation to a recipient in KMC Hospital, Manipal. Another kidney was transplanted to a recipient at the institute. The eyes were also transplanted to a recipient locally, added the release.
