Bantwal, 09 Jul 2018: It’s owing to torrential rains since the past 2 days, the lifeline Netravati River flows beyond the danger level. The barrier wall of Thumbay vented dam that supplies drinking water to Mangaluru city collapsed; while it threatens the pump house located nearby.
The barrier wall collapsed on Sunday, July 8 at 4.00am, owing to incessant rains across coastal Karnataka and Western Ghats; resulting in floods in Netravati River. It caused floods in vented dam at Thumbay and AMR dam at Shamboor, near here.
Thumbay dam has 8 meters deep water, while its all crest gates were opened except 2. The barrier wall was built 60 years ago that collapsed but poses no threat to the dam, informed the staff at the location.
Mangaluru civic authorities cautioned the people living along the banks of Netravati River, to take care of their cattle and move to safer places as there would be surge in floods.
