Udupi, 13 Oct 2015: The two days long annual sports of five units of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions began with impressive inauguration function on Tuesday, 13 October 2015 at 9.30 am. The function was presided over by Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Correspondent of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions. Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza-member of Udupi Zilla Panchayat was the chief guest. Otheer guests of honour included: Mrs. Ranjani Hegde, President of Belle Grama Panchayat, Devdas Hebbar, member of Udupi Taluk Panchayat and Alphonse Alva-Vice President of Parish Pastoral Council.
The heads of the five educational institutions-Commodore Jerome Castelino-Dean of St. Lawrence Degre College, Mrs. Chandrakala BE-Principal of St. Lawrence PU College, Mrs. Veera Fernandes-Headmistress of St. Lawrence English Medium High School, Mrs Leena D’Silva-Headmistress of St. Lawrence Kannada Medium High School and Richard Andrade-Headmaster of Church Aided Higher Primary School were also on the dais.
The inauguration function began with the grand march past to the tune of the band. Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas received salute from the marching sports students who put in their best foot forward providing grace and dignity to the entire march past in particular and sports-meet in general.
Following the prayer song presented by the students of St. Lawrence PU College and welcome address by Mrs. Chandrakala BE, Mrs. Ranjani Hegde unfurled the flag of St. Lawrence Educational Institutions. Thereafter, meritorious sports students representing the five institutions led by Vijay D’Souza carrying the torch entered the sports ground and running on the track handed over the torch to Devdas Hebbar who in turn lighted the sports flame.
Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza formally inaugurated the two days long sports meet by lighting the lamp in the presence of the dignitaries.
As the representative of the sports boys and girls, Howard Pereira took the oath as all the sports boys and girls extended their right arm confirming the oath.
Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Souza and Rev. Fr. Clement Mascarenhas in their messages wished well to all the students who would be participating in the sports competition.
John Castelino compeered the inaugural function.
According to Joseph, the Physical Director of St. Lawrence PU College and the chief coordinator of the annual sports, during the two days long sports meet around 520 students will be competing in 240 events. Besides the physical directors of all the institutions, teachers, lecturers and supporting staff and student volunteers will be helping in conducting the mega sports event.
