Udupi, 18 November 2010: The Muslim brethren celebrated one of their most important festival known as Bkarid or Eid-ul-Zuha or Eid-al Adha on Wednesday, 17th November 2010 in the Madina Masjid Shanti Nagar in Udupi. This festival is celebrated all over the world and India. It commemorates willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead. The meat is divided into three parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor and needy.
This festival is also known as the Festival of Sacrifice or Greater Eid. This an important festival There is a tradition of sacrificing a goat on this day. Goat is called ‘Bakr’ in Urdu and ‘id’ is derived from the word ‘iwd’ which means ‘Festival’ in Arabic language.
Bakrid is a special day as on this day annual pilgrimage to Mecca is taken up by Muslims worldwide. The day falls approximately 70 days after the end of Ramadan month.
