Heavy rain from Monday afternoon to midnight causes flash flood

Moodubelle, 31 August 2010:  After bright and sunny Sunday, people woke up to cloudy Monday morning. By afternoon the sky was overcast with tick dark clouds and by 4pm it started raining so heavily that people could not move out of their shelters. The rains continued throughout the night till around 1 am with slight respite in between. The heavy downpour, not witnessed for some time inundated the low lying paddy fields during the night as the already swollen river spilled its excessive water into the paddy fields.

Those living in the vicinity of the Belle-Udyavara River were surprised to see flash floods submerging the paddy which had just started sprouting the tender corn. This was the second flood of this season. It is believed that floods during this phase of the growth of the paddy are harmful to the growth of paddy corn as the fish relishes such tender corn. If the flood water does not drain out fast the fish would continue feasting on the tender corn and damage the prospect of a good crop. However, by the time this report is being written, the flood water has drained into the river as there has been no rain since morning and the day is bright and sunny so far.
