Moodubelle, 15 May 2010: Many of the land-line telephone users in Moodubelle have been put to great inconvenience as their telephones have been ‘dead’ since quite a long time and in spite of repeated complaints to the telephone exchange at Moodubelle, there is no response and the telephone users do not know whom they can approach to redress their grievances.

This has been a common knowledge that once the telephone stops working for one reason or the other, the consumers may have to wait for days together before it is rectified. While the Karkala-Udupi Road was being widened the telephone cables were uprooted and snapped at many places which did take quite a long time for rectification. Even at normal times whenever the telephones stop working the staff at the Moodubelle telephone exchange is slow to respond.

The thunderstorm and lightening on 25th April 2010 had resulted in the damage of telephone cables in a number of places. However, in certain places the telephones are still ‘silent’ as the damaged cables are not yet rectified. The telephone of this reporter has been ‘dead’ since 25th April 2010 and in spite of repeated appeals to the concerned persons at the telephone exchange no action has been taken so far. This is the fate of other telephone users in the area. It has been reported that being fed-up with the poor service by the  telephone exchange at Moodubelle, a number of people have surrendered their land-line telephones and switched over to cell-phones.

In the last week this reporter visited the Moodubelle telephone exchange to personally bring to the notice of the authorities about the problems faced by him and others in the area. However, he found that all the three doors of the telephone exchange building were closed and there was no response from any one when called out. The entire exchange building presented a look as if it has been deserted and unattended. As the reporter came out, he saw the BSNL sign board in a precarious slanting position symbolising the state of affairs in the telephone exchange in Moodubelle.

Surprisingly there is a provision by BSNL to submit the general complaints by subscribers online. The address is http://portal.bsnl.in/bsnlcca/GeneralComplaint.aspx we need to provide the telephone number, Name and Complaint in the given format, in order to submit the complaint. Do not know whether this will work. May be we all those who are suffering from the telephone services can complain and see our luck.

This nothing new for Belle. Surprisingly people of Moodubelle are used to these issues and prefer to be silent spectators. Actually only the people spoiled the working of these Telephone Exchanges for 2 reasons : 1. When any such connection outage happens, no one protests instead accepts it as a routine issue. Unless we protest this, same situation will continue. 2. Also most of the people approach the Telephone exchange and offer them small amount of bribe to rectify the faults. Whoever pays will get back the connection. So we only spoiled the working of telephone exchanges by bribing them and not protesting. I had the first hand experience when my connection was out for almost 15 days last year. I approached Belle exchange 2 times but no use. Then I went to Main Technical exchange at Udupi (after Kalsanka, before MGM college). One officer was so lethargic that he started to give me lecture about the governments support to private telecom operators ... etc. After one hour of arguing with him, I finally met a senior officer who promised to get it repaired. Just before I reach my house in 2 hours, the phone was rectified. So people fight for the right when we pay so much tax.

Moodubelle Telephone exchange has been providing this type of lethargic and unacceptable service level to the consumers for decades now. At regular intervals land line goes dead for weeks. I wonder if people of Belle can get hold of contact details of officials willing to attend to the chronic service disorder problem!

Dear reporter and other customers of BSNL services, it is better to give up hopes rather than getting disappointed in the future. We have personal experience about this a couple of years ago. And finally we landed up having the wireless phone from BSNL.And this wireless phone is just for name sake and in case of emergency you had it!. On one side we are boasting that our achievement in communication industry and on other hand we are like in third world country. Especially one of the most progressed district in communication in whole country. The service provider are not at all bothered for the quality of service and moreover indirectly forcing the consumer to switch over to the services of private firms. So we are puzzled about these things. Not only us , the influential people like so called leaders are have the same opinion.I feel it is the high time for all us to come together and protest strongly and pressurize the concerned department officials to take immediate action , so that these services will be benefited for the common man.

As rightly mentioned by the reporter, the land telephone service is very poor in Moodubelle. In spite of repeated complaints there is no action being taken. When anybody succeed in meeting their staff and complain, they just give false commitments, which never take place. They would also give so many excuses. The service provider advertises in TVs which actually never happens. It is high time the service provider BSNL wakes up and clean the mess of these inefficient staff.
