Udupi: Sampada Distributes Educational Loan Sponsored by KCWA to Needy Students

Udupi, 16 Jul 2022: Educational loan sponsored by Kuwait Canara Welfare Association (KCWA) amounting Rs. 4,08,405/- was distributed to the needy students at a function held in the Conference Hall, Bishops House Udupi on Saturday, 16 July 2022. The brief function was presided over by Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo. Arun Jossy D’Souza of Perampalli and Internal Auditor of KCWA representing the association along with Fr. Reginald Pinto-Director of Sampada and Prof. Derick Mascarenhas-Vice Principal of TMA Pai Polytechnic, Manipal and UCAT National Representative to Rome were present on the dais.
In his introductory remarks following welcome address, Fr. Reginald Pinto said that in the sixth year of the distribution of the loan sponsored by KCWA, 11 needy students were provided with intrest free loan to the tune of Rs. 4,08,405. In total during the past 5 years 133 students were selected for the loan and a total of Rs. 24, 52,650/- loan was distributed.
Speaking on this occasion, the representative of KCWA, Arun Jossy D’Souza said that in 1988 four Mangaloreans started an association to help needy youth of the undivided Mangalore Diocese in their educational ventures. Gradually the association grew under the name of Kuwait Canara Welfare Association which organized various cultural programmes to raise funds to support the education of the poor and marginalized students. They provided funds to various parishes which were kept in banks as FDs and out of the interest needy students were provided financial assistance for their education. In many parishes such FDs are still in existence.
Adding further, Arun Jossy D’Souza said that it was during the Silver Jubilee of KCWA, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo was the chief guest of the function. On this occasion, he made an appeal to the office bearers of KCWA to help Udupi Diocese in creating a Central Education Fund which would be managed by Sampada under the Directorship of Fr. Reginald Pinto. KCWA accepted the proposal of Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo and since 6 years the needy students of Udupi Diocese have been benefitting from the funds provided by KCWA.
In his message, Bishop Gerald Isaac Lobo narrated his association with KCWA and conveyed his gratitude for the magnanimity that they had shown towards the needy students of Udupi Diocese. He made an appeal to the students to put in their best efforts in their education and have a better future which would help them in repaying the interest free loan which can be redirected to other needy students so that the chain can continue.
Arun Jossy D’Souza distributed the interest free educational loan to the selected students.

Prior to the loan distribution programme, Prof. Derick Mascarenhas gave motivational lecture to the students and their parents on the topic “Preparation of the Future With Education”.
