Sampada-Udupi Organizes Cancer Awareness and Hair Donation Drive As Part of Cancer Day Programme

Udupi, 19 Feb 2022: As part of the Cancer Day (4 February) Sampada Udupi organized ‘Sparsha’ Cancer Awareness and Hair Donation Drive on Saturday, 19 February at 3 pm in the Conference Hall in the Bishop’s Office in the premises of Mother of Sorrows Church, Udupi.

 

Ms. Jocelyn Titmas Fernandes-Sub-Inspector of Excise, Udupi Town was the guest of honour. Dr. Eshwari-Assistant Professor, Community medicine department, KMC Manipal and Mrs. Judith Shaila D’Silva-Indian Cancer Society, Mangalore were the chief guests. The programme was presided over by Fr. Reginald Pinto-Executive Director, Sampada Udupi.

 

Following the prayer by the staff of the Sampada and welcome address by Mrs. Judith D’Souza-Coordinator of Sampada Udupi, the dignitaries on the dais inaugurated the proceedings of the programme by lighting the lamp.

 

In her message Ms. Jocelyn Titmas Fernandes said that Sampada through Sparsha programme gives hope and support to the cancer patients. She  was keen to donate her hair under the Sparsha programme two years ago but could not fulfill her desire due to Covid restrictions. She expressed her happiness that she was invited as the guest of honour for the cancer awareness and hair donation programme this year.

 

 

In her keynote address Dr. Eshwari said that anyone can be affected by cancer. Hence, it is important to be aware of the symptoms, causes and precautions to be taken to prevent cancer. Cancer is caused due to the irregular multiplication of cells in any part of the body. She further said that there are many factors that cause cancer among the people. These include hereditary, unhealthy food, change of hormones especially among the women, tobacco, alcoholism, consumption of vegetables and fruits grown by using chemical fertilizers and climate change.

 

Dr. Eshwari highlighted on the incidents of cancer among the women. She said that women usually suffer due to breast, uterus and mouth cancer.  In India around 28 percent of the women suffer due to breast cancer, 17 percent due to uterus cancer and around 5 percent due to mouth cancer. She advised the women to have self-examination occasionally to find out whether they have any lumps in their breasts. In case of doubt they should have themselves medically checked and have mammography done. She also briefly spoke about uterus and moth cancer and suggested remedial measures to prevent cancer.

 

Mrs. Judith Shaila D’Silva in her speech briefly mentioned about the origin of the Indian Cancer Society. She said that it was established in 1951 at the initiative of Naval Tata with noted oncologist, Dr. D.J. Jussawalla and as India’s first voluntary, non-profit, national organization for awareness, detection, and providing cure and treatment for cancer patients in India. She expressed happiness that the Mangalore Branch of the Indian Cancer Society has joined hands with Sampada in spreading awareness about  cancer among people and provide possible assistance to the cancer patients.

 

 

The guest of honour and chief guests were honoured by Fr. Reginald Pinto. He also felicitated Mrs. Anita Dias-Present President of the Udupi District Sugamya Mahila Okkuta and Mrs. Pramila D’Sa-former President by presenting them mementos.

 

Mrs. Judith Shaila D’Silva released Sampada’s ‘Strategic Plan: 2022-25’.

 

Fr. Reginald Pinto presented certificate of appreciation to 6 hairdressers who had volunteered to harvest hair from 19 hair-donors which would be used to provide wigs to those women who lose hair due to chemo-therapy. 

 

Nineteen volunteers donated their hair to the noble cause who were given memento and certificate of appreciation by Fr. Reginald Pinto. Pramod from Alevoor who had already donated his hair was honoured by Fr. Reginald Pinto by presenting him memento and certificate. 

 

Mrs. Irene Noronha, one of the staff members of Sampada proposed the vote of thanks and Stanley Fernandes-Coordinator of Sampada compeered the programme.
