Udupi: Udyavar parish ICYM unit honors paddy farmers and farmhands

Udupi, 17 Jun 2020: Indian Catholic Youth Movement (ICYM) unit of St Francis Xavier parish, Udyavar, here felicitated those men and women who are involved in planting the paddy saplings and farmhands at the field of veteran peasant Julian Dantis, near Kutpady Higher Primary School, Udyavar, here on Sunday, June 15.

 

Addressing the gathering, Udupi district BJP women’s unit president Veena Shetty said, ‘Farming is the backbone of India. PM Modi is giving top priority for farming.  The people in recent times are reverting back to farming as its proven means of livelihood and gets government support.  We have learnt lessons during Covid-19 nationwide lockdown. A few people who are working in different states across the nation are back at their native villages and taken keen interest to revive paddy cultivation. ICYM youth deserve accolades for honoring those women engaged in farming,’ said Veena.

 

 

Udupi block Congress vice president Sadashiv Amin Kattegudde said, ‘Our ancestors had longevity as they devoted themselves to farming in their whole life. Meanwhile, it’s irony that we have disregarded farming at this present time. There are many families in Udyavar and Kadekar villages who continue their age old profession of paddy cultivation. They are pursuing their farming amid Covid-19. Although the youth are not keen on farming, it’s noteworthy that they are encouraging the farmers,’ said Amin.

 

ICYM golden jubilee committee of St Francis Xavier parish, Udyavar honored 35 men, 10 men altogether 45 people who are engaged in farming in Udyavar, Kutpady and Kadekar villages, as part of 17th programme.

 

TP former vice president Ganesh Kumar, Udyavar gram panchayat vice president Riyaz Palli, rural Congress president Girish Kumar, entrepreneur Santosh Kumar, gram panchayat member Laxman, Lawrence D’Sa, Ramadhoota Gym president Prasanna Kumar, Ayoub, ICYM president Royal Castelino, secretary Priyanka D’Souza, ICYM golden jubilee core committee members Godfrey D’Souza, Maxmim D’Silva, Ronald D’Souza, Errol Gonselves, Julian Dantis, Roysan Lewis, Mervin D’Almeida, Prem Menezes and others were present.

 

ICYM advisor Royce Fernandes welcomed the gathering. Julia D’Souza proposed vote of thanks. The golden jubilee committee convener Steven Colaco Udyavar compered the programme.
