Udupi: Courtesy & humanity are more important in life than education - Dr Appaji

Udupi, 18 Mar: Milagres College, Kallianpur, here celebrated their annual day at Milagres Tri-Centinary hall here recently.  

 

Staff secretary Dr Surekha welcomed the gathering. Dr Vincent Alva, principal, read out the annual report and glimpses on achievements.

 

The chief guest of the event Dr Appaji Gowda S B, joint director, Collegiate Education Mangaluru Region unveiled the college magazine ‘Voice of Milagres’.

 

 

Speaking on the occasion, Dr Appaji Gowda S B said, ‘In India, the young community is more in number compared to other countries of the world. All other countries are now looking at us. There is a need to guide our youth in the right path (direction). Only then our country will develop. It is the duty of all of us. We need to make them truly educated and not just literates. In reality, literates are problematic to the society. We need to build a peaceful and stable society,’ he said.

 

‘Suicidal tendency is increasing among school children because of small issues. There is need to teach them how to face a problem. Every problem has its own solution. Let them convert weakness into strength. Let them find out strength, opportunity and threats. Personality will get built up right from there. Rather than the facilities to students in college, we should provide quality education. Courtesy and humanity are more important in life than education,’ said Dr Gowda.

 

One more guest of the day, Stephen Cornelio, alumnus of 1984 B Com batch, presently working as finance director of Vitol Dubai Limited said, ‘I feel truly honoured and privileged to share the stage with eminent personality. College memory is always fresh and has its own up and downs. Person should do hard work, get good grace including focusing on health, relation with people around him, and attitude of gratitude are important. Life is not just about failures and success in academics alone. If a student gets less mark in studies, it does not mean that he or she is a failure. Most important is giving the best shot in what you do and leave the rest to God. We realize the outer world, when we fly out of the nest. Give best in life including spiritual life too. Spend some quality time with your dear ones and do not give up confidence,’ he advised.

 

In his presidential address, Fr Lawrence C D’Souza, correspondent, Milagres Institutions, said, ‘Milagres Educational institution has been providing standard and quality education since 53 years.’

 

Addressing the students Fr Lawrence said that they should follow 5 Ds of dream, desire to achieve dream, determination, discipline and dedication in life to become a successful person.

 

‘Teachers are the backbone of any institution. They have the privilege to transform students into worthy citizens of India. They transform them into people of value and character. There are three ways of transforming others. That are logic, relationship and example, said Fr Lawrence.

 

Achievers of college were honoured by the institution for their remarkable achievements. Kavya Pai, who secured fourth rank in BSc Examination in 2018-19 in Mangaluru University, and Dhavan Kumar Shetty and Anusha Tauro for winning gold medal in financial accounting of B Com Examination 2018-19, Mangaluru University, was felicitated on the occasion.

 

The institution also honoured athletes and achievers in other fields. Various endowment prizes were distributed to students who scored distinctions. Colourful cultural programmes were performed by the students, followed by stage function.
