Mangaluru: Timely action of bystander saves a life!

Mangaluru, 29 Feb: A 6 year old boy who had accidentally drowned in a swimming pool in one of the residential flats in Mangaluru was saved by timely CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) by a doctor.

 

Fellow swimmer, Raheena, a MBBS student of K S Hegde Medical Academy (KSHEMA), here found the boy drowning in the swimming pool and pulled him out and shouted for help.

 

Dr Murali Shankar Bhat, working as an Anaesthesiologist in K S Hegde Medical Academy of Nitte (deemed to be University), Mangaluru, who was present at the scene, immediately rushed for help. The boy was unconscious, had stopped breathing and had no pulse. Dr Bhat immediately started resuscitation and was successful in reviving the boy.

 

Once heartbeat and breathing was restored, the boy was taken to nearby hospital. Boy was discharged from the hospital hale and healthy after 2 days. Because of exemplary courage of a student along with timely and apt efforts by the doctor, a life was saved.

 

CPR is an essential skill which should be performed at the time of cardiac arrest. Most of the time, the initial golden period lost during shifting the patient from the scene to the hospital without any resuscitation. Awareness of CPR is low among general public.

 

KSHEMA with its resuscitation cell conducts many CPR training and awareness programmes to the general public. All are hereby called on to learn CPR skills and help healthcare professionals to save lives.
