Mangaluru, 29 Jan: Karnataka state chief secretary T M Vijay Bhaskar advised municipal authorities to identify an alternative plot as the garbage dump at Pacchanady, here is unsustainable since it is marred with several problems.

Vijay Bhaskar held discussions after visit to garbage dump yard at Pacchanady, here on Wednesday, January 29.

It was found to be technically unviable to manage the dump yard in the coming days. The waste disposal has become a major problem that can be solved by identifying an alternative suitable plot, advised Vijay Bhaskar. He also said, ‘The unused quarries are ideal to convert dump yard, even if its located a far away.’

DK Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Roopesh drew attention of Vijay Bhaskar about the man made disaster created when 8 lac metric tons of garbage from Pacchanady dump yard flooded the residential quarters located on low-lying areas during incessant rains in 2019. The victims of that tragedy were already awarded compensations.

The high level technical team has arrived to inspect Pacchandy dump yard and reported that the design is unsuitable to further expansion and advised to clear the existing garbage by bio-mining, said Vijay Bhaskar.

MLA Bharat Shetty, ZP CEO Dr Selvamani, Municipal commissioner Shanady Ajit Kumar, deputy commissioner Gayatri Nayak, former mayor Bhaskar and others were present.

Vijay Bhaskar also visited the Mandara locality near Pacchanady that was affected by garbage dump during last monsoon. He also listened to the grievances of residents and assured to discuss the issue with distribution in awarding just compensation.

MLA Bharat informed Vijay Bhaskar that the victims of man made tragedy have lost everything. The issue was already discussed with CM that the victims are in dire need of state support.

Later, Vijay Bhaskar also visited Thumbe vented dam that supplies drinking water to Mangaluru city and viewed the water level stored in the dam. He advised to maintain water level to 6 meters high as it’s followed now, to thwart shortage of water supply during peak summer even at the cost of rationing.
