Mangaluru: Ramakrishna Mission carries out 37th voluntary cleaning in Old Port locality

Mangaluru, 19 Aug: Ramakrishna Mission carried out 37th voluntary cleaning under 5th phase of Swacchata Abhiyan at fisheries jetty and Bunder area, here on Sunday, August 18 at 7.30am.
It was jointly flagged-off in front of Yatim Khana by Sri Mohan Bengre, president, Mangaluru Fishermen’s Association and Gopalakrishna Kumble.
On this occasion, Ibrahim Bengre, Mohan Kottari, Damodar Bhat, Kiran Fernandez, Ashok Subbaiah, Shivaram Adoor, Umaprasad Kadekar, Dinesh Karkera and other volunteers were present.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohan Bengre said, ‘If the cleanliness drive being carried out selflessly by the dedicated volunteers is to be successful then public should cooperate. Ramakrishna Mission Swacchata Abhiyan is a model for the whole nation. Dedicated sustained efforts by the volunteers coupled with discipline are an example and pride of Mangaluru Compared to locals, the sense of awareness about cleanliness is lacking among the visitors and tourists. They also need orientation.’
Gopalakrishna Kumble said, ‘I am glad to know that effort is on to create awareness about internal cleanliness as well along with external cleanliness. Pure minds will help create a clean environment.’
Cleanliness: After the flagging off, volunteers regrouped and carried out cleanliness in 4 different roads. Mehboob Khan led the group of volunteers in clearing and removing the heap of garbage from the main entrance of fisheries jetty. Umanath Kotekar guided the volunteers from removing the heap of garbage from the junction of Good shed road and Bunder junction. Another such heap was cleared by Vittaldas Prabhu and Aniruddh Nayak. Both sides of the road were cleaned by the volunteers. Drains were cleared enabling the easy movement of rain water. Shishir Amin and other young volunteers removed unauthorised banners and posters. Subhoday Alva and Suresh Shetty visited shops and homes and created awareness about dengue, malaria and their prevention. Swami Ekagamyananda guided these volunteers.
Maintenance of painting & art work: Two years ago, painting and art work was done on the compound walls of Hampankatta University College and district Wenlock Hospital. The walls were cleaned and washed to remove the moss and dirt accumulated since two years. Satish Kenkanaje guided the volunteers.
Compost pot demonstration: Demonstration of compost preparation by using pot methods was held at St Rita Church, Cascia at Morgan’s Gate.
Captain Ganesh Karnik, mentor of the Abhiyan gave introductory talk and briefed about the significance of the Abhiyan and major milestones. Nallur Sachin Shetty gave the demonstration.
Cascia parish priest Fr Herald Mascarenes gave benedictory address and urged the public to use this method and avoid sending their household garbage to dumping yard. About 57 people assembled there registered their names by paying advance.
