Kalakul, Konkani theater repertory to present Kalakulotsav 2019, fest of 3 plays in city

Mangaluru, 15 Aug: Kalakul - the only Konkani theatre repertory, promoted by Mandd Sobhann, striving to promote Konkani and its distinct culture worldwide will be presenting Kalakulotsav-2019, a fest of 3 plays.

 

On Saturday, August 17 at 6.00pm, the play ‘Antigone’ directed by Viddu Uchil, will be staged at St Aloysius College Konkani Natak Sangh at the LCRI hall.

 

On Sunday, August 2, ‘Paying Guest’ directed by Arunraj Rodrigues will be presented at 6.30pm at the parish hall of St Joseph the Worker Church, Vamanjoor.

 

On September 1, the Convocation Ceremony of the 8th batch of Kalakul will be held at the closing ceremony of the 213th Monthly Theatre. A new play titled ’Hanv Konnachim?’ will be presented that day. All 3 plays have been written by Arunraj Rodrigues. Entry is free for all plays.

 

 

Mandd Sobhann started Kalakul in 2011 with the intention of giving a modern touch to Konkani plays and contemporizing it. NRI businessman and philanthropist Michael D’Souza Dubai has supported Kalakul by being its main sponsor for the year 2019.

 

The students learn acting, writing plays, stage setting, make up, sound and light management, mime and other aspects of theatre. They have to present 4 plays and a few street plays. The students are paid a monthly stipend and are also paid for every show presented. A Convocation Ceremony is held at the end of the term.

 

In the past 8 years, 290 shows of experimental and other forms of 32 plays have been presented in India and abroad. Kalakul has also presented a Kannada play and has also participated in State Level and National Level Theatre Festivals.
