Udupi distressed, 150 mm rain pours in a day

Udupi, 07 Aug: Incessant heavy rain lashed Udupi district on Aug 6, Tuesday. In the last 24 hours, the district witnessed an average of 150.4 mm rain. The incessant rain that pounded the district has created a flood-like situation in the low-lying areas.

 

Gusty winds uprooted several trees. Electric poles all over Kaup and interior Karkala and Udupi taluks causing serous damage. The heavy downpour completely damaged the national highway-169A and authorities were compelled to divert traffic to safer roads. The stretch extending from Seethandi area to Hebri was flooded.

 

 

The stormwater drains were blocked by muck raised by the gusty winds. In Baindoor, the area including Yedthare, Shiroor, Nada, Taggarse, Maravanthe, Badakere, Salbuda were submerged.

 

Farmland at Hosabagilu in Uppunda was completely flooded resulting in a loss worth lakhs of rupees.

 

In Shiroor a radial (tyre) shop got submerged in water. A house in Hadavinakone in Shiroor was damaged after a tree fell on it. The Nirgadde junction was marooned. Farmlands were submerged.

 

Around 67 properties including houses and cattle sheds are reported to be damaged in the district. A house in Heergana in Karkala was damaged completely. A house in Perdur in Udupi was completely damaged owing to the heavy rain and gusty winds. In Kundapur, a house was damaged. A cattle shed was damaged in Kalthur village in Kaup. In Nadsalu, a house was partially damaged.

 

 

Dist admin ready to tackle rain woes: 

Speaking to media Udupi DC Hephsiba Rani Korlapati said that the district administration is all set to tackle rain-related miseries. She said that the red alert is declared for the next three days.

 

With regard to the availability of the NDRF team, she said that as the team is stationed at Suratkal, it is available for service at any time.

 

Korlapati added that she has instructed the tahsildars to open relief centres if needed. As of now, there are no major disasters reported like landslides in the district.

 

She said that she is in touch with MESCOM officials and has directed them over the addressing of emergencies.

 

“Along with the ZP CEO, I have been visiting the affected areas and have assured people of the required assistance from the administration,” she added.

 

Areas like Bada, Yermal, Ucchila and Kaup are experiencing sea erosion. In some areas the ADB project of building the permanent sea wall is being executed. Simultaneously, the administration has raised the issue with the government, expressing concern over the probable damages due to the intensification of sea erosion.

 

The flood situation is constantly monitored. There are reports of partially and completely damaged houses in Kaup and Udupi.
