Mangaluru: Mandd Sobhann launches certificate course in Konkani folk songs

Mangaluru, 03 Jun: Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy in collaboration with Mandd Sobhann, city-based organization striving to promote Konkani and its distinct culture worldwide launched certificate course of Konkani folk songs at Kalaangann, Shaktinagar, here on Sunday, June 2 at 3.00pm.
The renowned music trainer Anil Patrao inaugurated the programme, by laying garland of jasmine and other flowers to Konkan’s traditional drum, Gumat.
In his preliminary address, Konkani Academy former president and Mandd Sobhann Gurkar Eric Ozario said, ‘The folk songs significant and form part of any culture. The women play key role in sustaining them. It exemplifies the struggles, concerns and growth of a community. Meanwhile, the course aims at teaching the new generation of youth to set the lyrics and foster it. It covers Konkani’s traditional folk songs, such as Mando, Dulbadam, Dekni, Gumat, Vovyo and Versa, Christmas carols, rhymes and songs of legendary musicians – altogether 40 songs. Those who attend all the classes will be awarded a certificate by the Academy.

Sixty youth are attending the classes that will conclude on July 14.
