Golden Jubilee of Religious Life of Sr. Celestine Lobo celebrated along with the Inauguration of ‘Sa

Udupi/M’Belle, 18 May: In a twin function, the Golden Jubilee of Religious Life of Sr. Celestine Lobo (AC) was celebrated along with the inauguration of ‘Sabeena’ Shopping cum Residential Complex on Saturday, 18 May 2019 in Moodubelle.

 

The thanksgiving mass was offered by the family along with relatives, friends and well-wishers at 10 am in St. Lawrence Church, Moodubelle. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Clement Mascarenhas, Parish Priest of the church. 

 

The felicitation function was held in the ‘Sabeena’ Shopping cum Residential Complex. 

 

Fr. Lawrence Cutinha, Assistant Parish Priest of Moodubelle conducted the brief prayer service and blessed the shopping sum residential complex following the inauguration of the residence by the brothers and sisters by cutting the ribbon in front of the main entrance to the residence.

 

 

Francis Lobo briefly narrated the history of the Lobo family and mentioned about the contribution of their father late Salvadore Lobo and mother Sabeena Lobo and introduced the family members to the guests.

 

Introducing Sr. Celestine Lobo (AC), Francis Lobo traced the circumstances that led to his sister  joining the Apostolic Carmel Congregation and her service in the educational field of the congregation for the last 50 years. 

 

Eldest brother of Sr. Celestine, Michael Lobo felicitated Sr. Celestine by offering her shawl and flower bouquet. Thereafter, Sr. Celestine cut the jubilee cake along with her surviving brothers and sisters.

 

Elias D’Souza, the chief engineer of the ‘Sabeena’ Shopping and Residential Complex was honoured by Sr. Celestine Lobo.

 

Denis Lobo who supervised the project was felicitated by Alphonse Lobo, the youngest brother in the family who was instrumental in the construction of the complex.

 

All the brothers and sisters honoured Alphonse Lobo and his wife on this occasion for the initiative that he had taken in the construction of the complex and organizing the Golden Jubilee function of Sr. Celestine Lobo’s religious life that brought the entire family together. 

 

Mrs. Sonia Lobo compeered the programme and welcomed the guests and Alphonse Lobo proposed the vote of thanks.

 

 

About Sr. Celestine Lobo (AC)

Sr. Celestine Lobo was born on 19 May 1951 as the fifth among nine children, five sons  and four daughters of late Salvadore and Sabeena Lobo of Kattingeri, Moodubelle. She had her initial education up to eighth standard in Church Aided Higher Primary and St. Lawrence High School, Moodubelle and ninth and tenth standard in St. Cecily’s High School, Udupi. She passed SSLC examination in 1968.

 

Having completed her high school education, Sr. Celestine joined the Apostolic Carmel (AC) Congregation on 31 May 1968 Mary Hill Convent, Mangalore. After spending six months in the Mary Hill Convent, she was sent to North India for further training and education.

 

Sr. Celestine underwent Novitiate training of religious life at Hazaribagh in Jharkhand  from 1971 to 1973 and took her First Profession on 21 January 1973 at Hazaribagh. Her mother Sabeena Lbo, brother Michael Lobo, niece Matilda Lobo and family friend Thomas D’Souza were present on this occasion. Her Final Profession was on 13 April 1978 at Mary Hill Convent, Mangalore that was attended by her mother, family members and relatives. The Silver Jubilee of Sr. Celestine’s Religious life was celebrated at Keorapukur in Kolkata.

 

 

As the Apostolic Carmel Congregation has been active in the field of education, Sr. Celestine acquired necessary educational qualification to serve in the institutions run by the Congregation. After graduating from St. Xavier’s College Ranchi, Sr. Celestine acquired B.Ed. degree from St. Anne’s B.Ed. College, Mangalore and completed M.A. course from North Bengal University, Siliguri.

 

After completing B.Ed. course, Sr. Celestine was posted in Keorapukur, Kolkata as Headmistress of Carmel Primary School where she served from 1986 to 1999. Thereafter she served as the Headmistress of  Carmel High School till 2011, thus serving the institution as Headmistress for a period of 25 years. The school and her post were approved by the Government of West Bengal. The school served the educational needs of very poor people living in that region. 

 

After her retirement from service in June 2011, Sr. Celestine was posted in Pakyong, Sikkim as a lecturer in the institution run by the Apostolic Carmel Congregation providing Diploma in Elementary Education to the trainees.

 

Recalling her vocation, Sr. Celestine said that she had a fervent desire to serve the poor and marginalized. When she expressed her intent to join the Apostolic Carmel Congregation to her father, he readily granted his consent in spite of being on sick-bed. He had a desire to see his daughter as a Sister. However, he passed away on 29 May 1968 and after his funeral on 30 May 1968, Sr. Celestine joined the convent on 31 May 1968. 

 

As she celebrates the Golden Jubilee of her religious life, Sr. Celestine has the great satisfaction of serving the church and the poor through her mission in Keoropukur, Kolkata where she dedicated 25 years of her religious life as Headmistress of the primary and high school that provided education to the poorest of the poor and marginalized students of the region.
