Gold worth Rs 4.65 lakh seized at Mangaluru International Airport

Mangaluru, 21 Mar: Gold worth Rs 4.65 lakh was seized by customs officials from a passenger who arrived from Dubai at the Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) on Wednesday. A total of 142.70 grams of 24 carat gold was seized from the passenger.
The passenger smuggling the gold had concealed the precious metal as 32 mercury coated pieces in 4 magnetic bracelets in check-in luggage.
5th case within a month
This is the fifth attempt in the same month to smuggle gold at MIA. The previous attempts were on Mar 4, 9, 11 and 16 and the passengers smuggling the gold had concealed the precious metal in paste form within their rectum. However, their attempt was foiled by the attentive customs official at the airport.
